Outdoor Lighting

Did a shoot for my friends metal band which was an interesting experience!

Lighting: 2 speedlights into reflective silver umbrella either side of me for the first image;
one speedlight into reflective umbrella to the left to fill shadows slightly, one on camera with 'ring flash' attachment.  I used the sunlight as a top/back light

  1. Georgia,
    I quite like these shots and I think you’ve definitely moving in the right direction but I have a few thoughts and suggestions that might help the work, as a whole, get to the next level. Though I think the first image is composed really nicely, I feel as though the smoke (if that’s necessary and something you want to pursue) needs to be thicker and perhaps a little more directed (maybe you could have it coming out of the lead singer’s head or ears or nostrils or maybe from a guitar or from the band as a whole). Though the lead singer is interesting (and your second image really conveys this) I would like to see him positioned in a context that is more specific to what he does (i.e. on a stage, in an industrial space where there are instruments) because at the moment he looks a bit like a cool dude hanging out with mates. The choice of the third image is a little strange. The seriousness and rebelliousness of the first two images is replaced with a more playful subject that diverges from the trajectory established by the other two. I think there is a narrative component to the outdoor lighting series and I feel as though this is really comprised by having this image – which is composed similarly to the second one – included here. It’s a great subject you’ve got but I would suggest doing with a more definitely satanic approach (as I think the smoke is gesturing towards). I think the main singer is the only band member you can really single out from the group and if you’re going to do this I would like to see him with a microphone or something that distinguishes him from the other group members. I know this sounds like a lot of stuff to take on board but I think you’re nearly there – keep at it.
